Life's important lesson: What have you learn today?

People have been asking me this question:"Marc, why did you leave H, aren't you happy working there? Why risk throwing a job away when the job stability in Singapore is not really that good?"

I'm amused.....

Sure, in a manufacturing environment, I can't denied that we keep hearing about job retrenchments. But then again, which company is "retrenchment free"? Even SIA has to retrench to keep itself lean. I don't really think Singapore economy is that bad. The news about people losing their jobs overnight was meant to educate Singaporeans to appreciate whatever jobs they are holding now.

In Singapore, we are a very conservative lot of people who are very afraid to try out things. We are afraid of losing our jobs, health, marriage, property..... You name it and we have it. (This explains why insurance agents are laughing their way through)
Why should we worry about losing all these things? Shouldn't we be treasuring whatever we owned at this moment instead of being paranoid about losing them?

Sure, I'm afraid of many things too:
1997 = Afraid of not getting into my desired University course
2001 = Afraid of not completing the degree within 4 years
2001 = Afraid of not landing a job
2002 = Afraid of not having a gf....
2005= Afraid of not acquiring a Mini before I turned 30

Life isn't being afraid. It is about trying new things and learning from mistakes. Only then could I learn. Being afraid to try isn't a matter of fail / success, it is a case of losing a chance to learn.

I discovered that I'm not really afraid of throwing a good job away. What I'm really afraid is losing faith in my own capabilities and underestimating what I can really achieve in life. True, I did comtemplate for some days prior to handling the resignation letter but I know very well that if I don't change, I will never know what the future holds for me.

Now, isn' t that is what life about, trying out new things?

So what have you learn today?

Have you read the book 'Dare to Fail'?

Describes perfectly what you've said.

Most are 'afraid' to let go what they have accumulated. Afraid that their years of effort will be wasted. The longer and the tougher it took for the person to accumulate the 'comfort', the harder it is to let go.

By letting go, this person starts afresh and learns something new. Takes a look at things from a different point of view.

Its much easier to let go when you have nothing. When you have something, it will be very much different. Especially when that something is necessary to carry some of your burden.

Let go when you're young.
